Ian Khuu research project: How Structural engineering benefits society
Research Program B: For students who intend their Research Project to contribute to their Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER). Evidence of learning must be presented in written form to meet the common written assessment component.

Week 1 During the first week of research project, Ms Woud talked a lot about the subject as a whole and its separate parts. The research project has 3 main parts to it; the folio, the research outcome, and the evaluation. Also during the week, she handed out multiple sheets of information, including; A research proposal template, a guide on how to write a proposal and many more about what was to be included inside the folio. She also explained to the class that there are two types of research evaluations, A and B. Evaluation A can be multimodal but it does not count towards a TER score, while B counts towards a TER, it can only be a written essay of 1500 words.
Week 2 In the second week, I've started to think about the topic that I wanted to research on. I decided on engineering. Other than starting to write the research proposal, this week was similar to the first. Ms Woud gave us more sheets on proposal writing and journal planning.
Week 3 At the start of the week, we were given the task of completing the proposal as it was due very soon. Ms Woud showed us the EBSCO site, which is like a paid searched engine that contain lots of references to books mags and journals, also had a lot of pictures. She also talked to us about the C.R.A.P system. (Currency, Reliability, Authority and Purpose.) During the rest of the week, i just continued with the research and my proposal,
Week 4 On the Monday lesson, I spent most of my time finishing my research proposal as it is due today, Ms Woud also directed us to the Assessment Planner for the semester, showing us when each part of the research project will be set and when it will be due .During the double, we just kept researching for information on our research topics. I've found lots of information on my topic of structural engineering, but i am finding it difficult to find anything on how structural engineering affects society, so most of the information that i found is just about what is, in general, structural engineering. Also during this week, I worked on making a mind map of my guiding/ focus questions to make my research much easier and more organised.Towards the end of the school week, I reorganised all of my files and folders on the research so I had extra copies of them, also starting from Friday, all of my journal entries are first typed up onto word to reduce more major grammar and spelling mistakes as I had saw a lot of them in the past weeks journals.
Week 5 I just continued with my research Monday – Found more information about the engineer career pathway. (engineering101 site) And a bit about structural engineer (Graduating engineer site) On Tuesday, Ms Woud showed the whole class how to annotate articles and resources by using word (By highlighting the part you want to annotate, going to the “review” ribbon and clicking on “New Comment”). Ms Woud gave out blue folders for the whole class to use, Ms Aherns suggested that I change my topic to “How Structural engineering benefits society.”
Week 6
On Monday, Ms Woud went through a A-grade Folio example with the class from the SACE website. She pointed out some of the interesting components of the folio (Like a timeline, resource summaries). Ms Woud also showed us how to use "Snipping Tool" which is basically a alternative to the traditional "Print Screen" method. I personally think that the programme would save time because you wouldnt need to manually save the "Print screen"-ed screen shot as the programme automatically opens up a image editing window which has a save file option. [Unrelated - Also started to use the "preview" button of wikispaces more often as many of the changes in the site came out different to how I wanted it to be].
Week 7 During the long weekend and the week, I've countinued on with writing my discussion. Week 8
Week 9 During both weeks 8 and 9, I’ve continued with my research; looking for informative sites, books and magazines. Also worked on a written discussion.
Week 10 Finished writing the discussion and handed it in. Ms Woud gave us a research outcome sheet that asked us about what our research was about, what we had discovered during the research, how we are planning to present the research, to whom and when.
Term 1 Holidays Week 1 During the first week of my holidays, I focused more on completing some other subjects homework and revision, so I didn't set a lot of time to work on my research. In the days that I did work on the research, it was just mainly analysing my resources.
Week 2 This week didnt go as planned, there were a lot of distractions and variations to my time table that I draft at the start of my holidays. In the end, I was only able to organise some of my information and started to preparing to write my outcome that is in the form of an essay.
Term 2 Week 1
During this week, our draft outcomes are due, and Ms Woud is checking on what we have done so dar, what is in our folios and giving us a predicted based on what she has seen. Proposal Proposal - Ian Khuu 2012 Discussion 1 - Ian Khuu 2012
